The Festival is the talk of the town because the French vessel l’Aventure, as well as other vessels from the Canadian and German fleets, are at the Shediac Harbour. Queens from other local festivals join Miss Claudette LeBlanc for her coronation: the Queen of the Memramcook strawberry festival, the Apple Queen, Miss Moncton and Miss Prince Edward Island.

The celebrations coincide with the Town of Shediac’s 50th anniversary. The weather’s bad, and the festivities, which were supposed to start on Wednesday, July 15th, don’t begin until Thursday and last until Sunday. Helicopters and airplanes entertain the crowd.

The 1954 edition is the first time the festivities last five days. Four bands participate in the Shediac Lobster Festival and Hugh John Flemming, Premier of the province, is also among the participants.

The Festival is postponed for one month to coincide with the bicentennial celebrations of the dispersal of Acadians. This special edition’s marked by a monument to five illustrious Shediac figures on Saturday, August 13th — Pascal Poirier, Clarence Webster, Placide Gaudet, Israël Landry and Ferdinand Robidoux. On Sunday, August 14th, 10,000 visitors attend the event and the following day, it’s the blessing of the fishing boats.

The decision’s made to have the Festival in August again, due to the success of the previous year’s event. The blessing of the boats took place once again and the Queen, Miss Lea Gaudet, is crowned by the Summerside Lobster Festival Queen, Miss Patsy Preston.
1957 • AUGUST 20 - 24
The 1957 guest of honour is Mr. John Fisher, a famous CBC radio commentator and now Director of the Canadian Tourism Bureau. He is credited with the Festival’s five-year hiatus. He feels that the Festival lacks Acadian charm and doesn’t focus enough on lobster. Mr. Fisher’s comments win out over the organizing committee, and they take a break.

The Shediac Lobster Festival resumes in 1962 after much consideration. The organizing committee works hard and organizes a varied and busy program. One full day’s devoted to Acadian celebrations with a grandiose parade, probably in response to Mr. Fisher’s comments in 1957, while the Navy and the Air Force play prominent roles on the other days. The largest lobster pot is on site.

The Blue Angels, an aerial acrobatic group with six planes, are visiting. The parade is particularly beautiful that year, with horses and colourful automobiles. The guest of honour is the “Pocket Rocket,” Henri Richard.

It was decided that for the next year, the Festival would have a permanent building. This year, people enjoy the circus and the bands, the fiddler Éloi LeBlanc and the folklorist Lorenzo Bourque, who delight the large crowd. More than 230 Wally Byam trailers, the ancestor of the Airstream, are in Shediac during the Festival.
1965 • AUGUST 18 - 21
This is the first time that Mr. Sweep, the internationally known jester, is present. Several shows take place, including Édith Butler and Lorenzo Bourque. Another new feature for that year — a sports car rally where 15 cars drive 720 miles across the South and Southeast of the province over a 24-hour period.

Mr. Sweep, the king of jesters, is on site to the delight of the children. That year, there’s a seaplane race with about 40 planes, as well as a horse show. The Bill Lynch circus is also there with rides, games and performances by unique people like the turtle woman, the tattooed man, etc.

On the first day, there’s a parade. Mr. Sweep is back for the festivities. Claude Provost of the
Montréal Canadiens (winner of seven Stanley Cups at the time) and pianist Norm Amadio,
among others, are also present. The Bill Lynch circus is also present. According to the Festival
organizers, four tons of lobsters are eaten each year. The Centennial Park in Shediac is inaugurated during these celebrations.

Several thousand visitors come to the Festival. Three hundred and fifty guests dance until 1:00 a.m. at the Lobster Festival Ball. The

During this edition of the Festival, the twinning of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, with the Town of Shediac is confirmed. The Skating Corbinos

Mr. Sweep is still very popular with children. Adults can enjoy magician Eric Levinson, who is nicknamed “The New Houdini.” The Alinos and Paulette Cormier charm the public with their songs, and the children’s parade is a success. The Festival’s a great success with over 70,000 festival goers. Three parades are held that year and magic was definitely popular: festival goers can see John Stuart and company, as well as dog acts with magic. There’s a horse show, and the Feux-Follets, Blue Diamonds and Paulette Cormier provide music and singing at the Festival. New this year — there’s a bicycle race from Shediac to Shemogue.

This is a turning point for the Festival. The Town of Shediac now administers the Festival and the festivities are extended
to six days. There are many improvements such as a fence and a new ventilation and heating system for the arena. The Jeunes chanteurs d’Acadie perform twice, Mr. Sweep entertains the children, and the knife throwers “The White Clouds” and the Sabo’s International Chimpanzees are also present.

The event has a new removable structure for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada expo. The parade at the end of the Festival has more than 80 bands, floats, majorettes and groups. The Italian Air Force is on hand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of General Balbo’s arrival in Shediac. This is also the 7th year in a row that the Campbell rides have been part of the event.

This is the year of folk music and theatre at the Shediac Lobster Festival. Viola Léger’s group offers performances of La Sagouine and Le Nez, while Danse Encorps, Bob White’s Country and Western Band and Groupe Musical des îles de la Madeleine provide music and dance. For the first time in 27 years, Mr. Sweep is not participating — at 73 years of age, he says he needs to rest and hopes to be back next year.

That year, three new attractions are introduced — the world’s largest lobster, floats from the Shediac region and a 15,000-light system, representing a $500,000 investment. The Pom’Kanel folkloric ballet company from Martinique, with 25 dancers and five musicians, steal the show that year. There are approximately 50,000 participants in all.

On Friday night, Cross Fire, Tempting Tragedy and Dirty Deeds are part of the rock night. On Saturday night, Angry Candy, Raymond Savoie, Jigueu, Cotchineux, Rhéal LeBlanc and Réveil provide the music. The Shediac Lobster Festival is listed as one of the top 100 festivals in Canada.

For this edition of the Shediac Lobster Festival, the organizers want to make a 65-foot lobster roll. When informed that the world record
is 68 feet, they had to add 4 feet to their initial calculations. In addition to the bread, 60 pounds of lobster, 10 heads of lettuce and four litres of mayonnaise are used.
At the Festival itself, Ti-Blanc Morin, Bryan Mallery, and Marty & Rosa provide the music. Friday, July 1st, there’s a legendary rock night that includes Rosa Laricchiuta, Jean-Marc LeBlanc, Steve LeBlanc, Isabelle LeBlanc, Stephanie Fraser, Norm The Jammer, Guy LeBlanc, Paul Lee, Brandon Furlotte and Big Bad Marty Band. On Saturday, July
12th, Rhéal LeBlanc, Jacques Comeau, Melanie Morgan, Shirley Albert, Victor Cormier, Brenda Doiron, Marco Silver and The Backyard Devils are all a part of the country night.There is also a boat parade between the two marinas in Shediac.
